I even attempted to kill the program with a command line but that didn't do the trick. The only way I've been able to get the program to close is to initiate a hard restart, however the problem will happen again randomly a day or two later.He originally had Office 2007 on his computer, so I uninstalled it an installed Office 2013 thinking that may fix the issue but no dice. I ran Symantec Endpoint Protection as well as Malwarebytes. Malwarebytes finished the scan but l ocked up with the same issue - first time its happened to something other than Office!If it helps, he's running Windows 7 64-bit on a Lenovo laptop (T530 I believe). Any advice would be appreciated. I have this this a few times.

Sometimes laptops don't stay open and connected long enough for all of the updates to complete. Windows updates that get interrupted part way through also can become resource hogs. This is especially true if closing the lid on the laptop puts it in sleep mode instead of allowing the full restart that is sometimes required.If a laptop has been used in locations where it can't connect to your Symantec server, the a/v update can suck up all available resources for a long time when you get back into the office.I have seen Lenovo bloatware cause issues as well. If apps like 'Message Center Plus', 'Lenovo solution center' and others were never removed, get rid of them.Are the MSOffice documents stored on the laptop? Or a network share?

Slow connections might cause issues or, if your wireless adapter is set so that it powers off to save energy, it might break the link and cause an app to hang.
