Blood Magic Unbound Crystal
Blood magic, the black art feared throughout Larentia and the rest of the civilized world. The very sight of blood-caked glyph from a fresh sacrifice is known to unman even the bravest of leigonarys. No prisoner of war fighting in Niharin could imagine a greater punishment than to be a sacrifice for a Kmirian sorcerer. It is an art that has consumed the lives of countless slaves, and the reason that Kmir's thirst for slave blood can never be slaked. But to Kmir, blood magic is the key to their liberation from the gods, the art that lets them stand against the heavens themselves and triumph.Blood is the medium through which all life is given motion.
The soul rests in the blood of a living creature, and through blood it provides the body with the energy it needs to function. If a body is drained of blood, it dies, and as the blood dries it can no longer serve as a container for a soul. The soul then evaporates into the underworld.
Blood magic uses the soul as a source of energy for spells. These spells are cast through glyphs, complex symbols that, upon receipt of energy, convert it to a specific purpose. A fire glyph will use a soul's energy to convert surrounding matter into fire, an explosion glyph will use the soul's energy to detonate the material upon which the rune was written, and so on. The most skilled blood sorcerers can carve more complex glyphs, or use several glyphs in a specific sequence, to make very complex changes. All blood can be used for blood magic, but human blood is the most potent. A few drops of human blood can make a light glyph glow for an entire evening, while one would need to drain five whole chickens to receive the same effect.
The most complex and powerful spells often require enough blood to kill the sacrifice. Raising the great monuments of Kmir, ensuring that the river Sotek flows, and powering the Kmirian war machine all require the sacrifice of thousands of slaves a year. To match this use through animal blood would require the slaughter of every farm animal in the known world. The art of blood magic has existed since time immemorial.
It is known that the priests of Niharin practiced blood magic and for centuries ruled the city-states of that region. During their wandering through the desert, the Kmirians learned the art of blood magic from the Niharin priests, and from then onwards became the masters of the art. The river Sotek, the great river that waters Kmir and allows the Kmirian state to exist, was created through the sacrifice of Kmir's twelve rival tribes. Kmir used blood magic to great effect, constructing great cities and necropolises and, through the use of blood sorcerers on the field of battle, allowed Kmir to triumph over her enemies. Kmir's status as great power and hegemon of northern Ifra was only possible through blood magic.Kmir remains proud of its blood magic. The Kmirians consider it the tool that guarantees Kmir's independence from the gods they despise and the great powers they compete with.
Kmir's blood sorcerers have studied and refined the art over the millennia, surpassing everyone in the known world. Few foreign artisans can match the craftsmanship and skill of a Kmirian glyph carver.
Kmirian scalpels, blood pumps and decoagulants are the finest in the known world, developed over countless centuries. He who is being sacrificed by a Kmirian sorcerer can at least be assured that every drop of his blood will be put to good use.Kmir guards its blood lore jealously, knowing that their superiority and security is dependent on their mastery of blood magic over all else. All Kmirian blood sorcerers take an oath to the Pharaoh and to their fellow blood sorcerers never to divulge their secrets to foreigners. Those that are caught disseminating blood lore are punished harshly. If they speak any secrets, their tongues are cut out. If they write any secrets, their hands are chopped off.
If a sorcerer is caught breaking his oath, he suffers the same punishment, and is then mummified alive and buried in the deepest tombs in the City of the Dead. Some of these sorcerers have escaped this punishment and now terrorize Kmir. The path to becoming a blood sorcerer is an arduous one, and only the brightest and most dedicated can become one. Blood lore is ancient and complex, requiring an entire life of study to master even one field of blood magic. Only those who have unshackled themselves from a mortal frame can truly call themselves masters of all blood magic. The great tutors of blood magic, almost all of whom are Kmirian, only select from the upper crust of society, for only they can pay the exorbitant prices these masters demand. Being the son of nobility or a sorcerer is practically a requirement, though there are those of low birth who have succeeded in becoming a student of a blood master. Those blood sorcerers that choose the path of complete mastery must sacrifice their humanity, and their fellow man. They forego the comforts of normal life, shunning any friends and family they may have had prior to walking the path, for the mastery of blood magic requires all of a sorcerer's time and energy.

This process is voluntary at the start, and some sorcerers break away from their studies out of exhaustion and a desire to reunite with their loved ones, but the truly curious and ambitious become addicted to study. Should a blood sorcerer continue on the path, the study of blood magic becomes all consuming, as the glyphs burn themselves into the sorcerer's mind. As they advance in skill, these blood sorcerers use their black art to replace vital functions such as sleep and eating, so they may devote even more time to study. Eventually, the sorcerer dies, his body breaking from neglect.
Blood Spells And Black Magic
But the sorcerer has undoubtedly foreseen this, using blood magic to keep his soul bound to his body even after death and to maintain those functions vital to continued study. It is in this manner that wights, the undying masters of blood magic, are born.
